This CSS3 Image Lightbox is a simple and effective alternative to javascript-based solutions. It works on mouse click and has been tested on all major browsers.

Keep in mind that some CSS3 features like rounded corners or animations are not rendered with old browsers (especially IE) but the functionnality remains. Internet Explorer needs the ie7-js to work properly.
